Web Design F.A.Q
We have started this F.A.Q to help with all those questions that come up when building or upgrading your website. It is in it’s early stages of life at the moment, but would love to hear from you so we can grow how much information is available.
While building your own website using trendy new platforms that offer a drag and drop builder does sound appealing, often you will find yourself in the position of not being able to get the look and feel to match your brand. Some are happy to compromise on this for a quick and easy fix, but then you have a generic looking website that does not stand out in a heavily flooded online environment. Of course, we are biased (being web designers/developers) but the benefits of using a local designer far out weight do it yourself.
For example, we often have clients who have started out on Squarespace or Shopify themselves and done a pretty good job. But as their business has grown their website has not been able to offer desired features to showcase their products or functionality to run smoothly with the increased traffic. Ultimately they turn to a developer to try and modify their website which can go either way… either it costs a fortune to have a custom plugin made for their existing site or the platform simply just can’t do what they need it to, so they build a new website from scratch.
This one is easy, support your local small business and they will support you. Plus you won’t just be another invoice number to the business. A good local developer will take the time to understand your business needs and brand. They will offer support to make sure you are running without hiccups. They will offer advice on how to keep up to date in an ever-changing environment and in the long run, they will save you money.
LOCAL… a local hosting server can be substantially faster for users here in Australia. Tech support will also be in the same timezone you. If your website is hosted overseas, when a visitor lands on your website the request goes from their computer to the nearest major city, across the ocean in ageing underwater cables to a server in let’s say…. Hong Kong. Then the requested information has to make the same journey back to the user’s computer. That is slow and can be unreliable. From $3.90 per month, you can have your website hosted in Sydney or Melbourne for a fast reliable service with 99% uptime.
A good web developer will build your website with your future needs in mind. Some clients don’t want to have anything to do with their website and prefer that the developer maintains the website updating content, managing security and keeping constant backups of their website just in case.
Others want to be able to update and change their website weekly or daily. It’s important to discuss this with your developer from the outset so they build you the correct platform to suit your needs and abilities.
Shoot us an email or give us a call, we would love to discuss what we can do to get your website to the level you want it to be. Whether it is slow, doesn’t look right, too hard to update, costing you a small fortune to run or just outdated… we will work with you to get you exactly what you want at an affordable price.
